Joint CCSS-UvA Workshop on Computational Social Science and Intelligent Systems, Amsterdam 2024

Report on the Joint CCSS-UvA Workshop

The Joint CCSS-UvA Workshop on Computational Social Science and Intelligent Systems, Amsterdam 2024, was held on 6 and 7 March 2024 at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It was jointly organized by the Center for Computational Social Science, Kobe University and several institutions at the University of Amsterdam - namely Informatics Institute and Institute for Advanced Study.

First, two of the main coordinators of this event, Prof. Ivan Romic (CCSS, Kobe University) and Prof. Fernando Santos (Informatics Institute, University of Amsterdam) gave an overview of the workshop. Next, Prof. Kamihigashi, the Director of the CCSS Kobe University, welcomed the participants and thanked the University of Amsterdam for hosting the two-day workshop. He also introduced the international peer-reviewed journal, Journal of Computational Social Science, for which Prof. Kamihigashi acts as the editor-in-chief.

The workshop was organized into two main themes - research and education. Research presentations covered theoretical, experimental, and applied research on human behavior using computational social science methods. Specifically, presentations included innovative frameworks for field experiments and experiments on large networks, as well as the role of algorithmic recommenders and AI bots in understanding polarization fueled by social media. Additionally, discussions extended to the dynamics of coupled human-natural systems in water and energy supply, development of voice assistive technology, and understanding of monetary and financial systems within the context of social media's influence.

The education presentations introduced new undergraduate and graduate programs, alongside research initiatives in computational social science and complex system science by Prof. Vasconcelos, Prof. Lees, and Prof. Pickering. Highlighted were the challenges of launching these programs, emphasizing three key elements: the university's bottom-up organizational approach that encourages faculty-driven initiatives, political backing from the Mayor of Amsterdam, and the capacity to engage diverse stakeholders, providing students with collaborative project opportunities during their studies.

Over the two days, the workshop was attended by 50 participants, confirming the success of the event and growing relationship between two universities.
